NEUROSURGERY RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Welcome!

The neurological surgery residency training program at the University of California (UC), Irvine is a comprehensive residency training program designed to give trainees broad experience in all aspects of adult and pediatric neurological practice as well as all clinical practice settings including clinical academic, academic research, health maintenance organization, and private practice. The program is seven years long and generally accepts one resident trainee per year. The residency program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), was officially launched on July 1, 2008.

UC Irvine Medical Center, located in the City of Orange, is a comprehensive medical care center and Orange County's only university research hospital. It is the principal clinical facility of the School of Medicine operated by the University. In early 2009, UC Irvine Medical Center openned its doors to the new seven-story, 482,428-square-foot UC Irvine Douglas Hospital. With the expansion Phase II, the new hospital will be equipped with a total of 19 operating rooms and 424 licensed beds. Services are provided in medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, family medicine, dermatology, pathology, radiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, ophthalmology, neurology, anesthesiology, orthopedics, geriatrics, oncology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, and radiation oncology. UC Irvine Medical Center also has cardiac, pediatric, neonatal, respiratory, burn medical-surgery, and neuroscience intensive care units and more than 90 specialty outpatient clinics. It is the designated countywide Level 1 trauma center.

Residency Program Overview

The first year (PGY-1) of training includes 9 months of surgery training tailored towards neurological relevance as well as 3 months neurology training. The remaining 6 years include 51 months (4.25 years) of required neurosurgical and 3 months of elective neurosurgical training time, plus 1 year or research, in addition to 6 months of non-neurosurgical training in the clinical neurosciences. These six years include the following: PGY-2: 12 months neurosurgery at UCIMC, PGY-3: 6 months neurosurgery at Kaiser Foundation Hospitals/Anaheim (KFH), 3 months neuropathology at UCIMC and 3 months of neuroradiology at UCIMC, PGY-4: 6 months neurosurgery at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and 6 months clinical neurosurgery at KFH, PGY-5: 12 months of research at UCIMC or UCI main campus, PGY-6: 6 months Neurosurgery at CHOC and 3 months stereotactic radiosurgery at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian (HMHP), Newport Beach. An elective of either 3 months of Interventional Radiology including Endovascular Surgery at UCIMC or 3 months of Multi-disciplinary Spine Service at UCIMC, PGY-7: (NS-5) 12 months as chief resident at UCIMC.

Beginning with the PGY-2 year of training, residents are expected to prepare and submit at least one manuscript for peer review publication each year of their training. They take the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS) written examination for either practice or credit each year of training beginning with the PGY-2 year. The earliest year they can take the examination for credit is the PGY-4, and they must pass the ABNS written examination by the completion of their PGY-6 year in order to progress to their final chief residency year. Assuming that the above requirements are met, and that the faculty evaluations of the resident are satisfactory, the entire program is expected to be complete in a total of seven years from its beginning.
