Many seniors assume they have Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. The fact that NPH symptoms are similar to the Alzheimer's, primary care doctors are not checking for the posibility of NPH. Luckily for Jeanne Folmer, Dr. Laura Pare identified her diagnosis as NPH after a series of spinal fluid tests. Shortly after, Dr. Pare performed a shunt surgery on Jeanne that turned her life completely around.
"7.5 million Americans are estimated to have some form of dementia and NPH is believed to account for 5 percent of those cases, which means about 375,000 people have it. But the number of people being treated for NPH is only around 11,000," notes Dr. Pare.
